My Little Garden 7th October 2023

The first week of October has been one that won’t hold particularly good memories. I’ve had an issue with my all electric car for the last six weeks. An error message about the ‘Electric Drive’ that made me slightly anxious about motorway driving and a wait of six weeks before my local VW dealer could run a diagnostic test. When that day finally came, so did the news that the ‘computer’ said they couldn’t fix it, and I had to book it into another branch of the same dealership qualified to resolve battery issues. Very apologetic they were, but my car is now booked in for the 4th of December. If it doesn’t die on me before then that is.

In the garden where things are a little calmer, I’m looking forward to a weekend of October sunshine. At least that’s what the forecast has been saying, although the little row of sunshines on my weather app seems to be diminishing by the day

  1. Miss Bateman

Looking back at what I wrote about this time last year, it seems Miss B was putting on a slightly better show, but I’m still pleased to see a solitary flower wrapping its way around the swingseat.

2. White Aster

Symphyotrichum novi-belgii ‘Snow Cushion’ is an aster that I wonder why I bother with, apart from that brief period in autumn when it flowers.

3. Purple Aster

Aster x frikartii ‘Mönch’ on the other other hand, is an absolute star and is just about recovering from a trauma in spring when I had to move it.

4. Cerise Aster

This Symphyotrichum ‘Samoa’ featured the other week when I complained about it being in the wrong place and very lackadaisical when it came to flowering. Obviously, it heard me and was concerned enough for its continued existence to make an effort. It’s a keeper, but it needs to be moved to a better location.

5. Leaves

Some autumn colour on this lovely little cherry ‘tree’ Prunus Kojo-no-mai

6. Berries

The blackbirds have started eating the pyracantha berries, so I don’t expect there to be many left next week. I have been trying to ignore the state of the fence, but clearly I need to brave the thorns and it some tlc.

And that’s it folks. Hopefully, the two days of promised sunshine will materialise, and I can get busy in the garden.

Have a great weekend.
