My Little Garden 9th Mar 2024

The crocus have been fabulous this year. I didn’t realise I had so many, and they’ve brought much needed cheer to the garden in the last few weeks. The purple ones seem to dominate, but I have a few stripey ones and the odd white and yellow. Perfect for the early pollinators when we get some sun, and they open up.

And we did finally get a few days of welcome sunshine this week, which until it turned really cold on Friday, almost made it feel like spring. The birds have been singing away, I’ve had tea breaks outside in the swingseat, and I feel like the gloom of winter is lifting.

It’s getting easier to pick six things for Saturday without repeating too much from the previous week, but I’m afraid I can’t resist one last crocus photo (or two, or three). So I’ll start with…..

  1. A happy bee

On one of the sunny days.

2. The first butterfly

I caught a glimpse and managed a quick shot before it fluttered off. Whilst it won’t win any prizes, I was thrilled to see this Small Tortoiseshell last weekend.

3. Hyacinth

A random blue one, but I think a few more would look nice (makes note for next year).

4. Anemones

Something else I need more of for next year.

5. Tomatoes

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I was going to grow tomatoes. I don’t normally bother, but we eat so many of them that I thought I would. I wanted a variety that didn’t need vertical support, so I’ve gone for Tumbling Tom Red which can be grown in a pot or even a hanging basket. The seeds germinated after 8 days in a pot on a warm windowsill, so i still have my porch for the cosmos and zinnia that I usually start off indoors.

6. The very last crocus

No more until next year, but I make no apologies for a crocus dominated week.

Have a great weekend and thanks for reading.
