My Little Garden in Week 14 of Lockdown
At the beginning of the week, the country was eagerly awaiting news from Boris as to whether we could see our families indoors and get our hair cut. Some folk were also waiting to see if the pubs would open, but as I’m more of a glass or wine in the garden sort of person, the latter didn’t greatly interest me one way or the other. And we don’t have a decent pub in walking distance…..
On a very simplistic level, the last daily briefing was all fairly good news and on the 4th July we are being allowed to progress to the ‘new normal’ of every day living. I won’t dwell on all the remaining negatives of the situation, but I won’t be going anywhere near a beach and thank goodness for the garden!
So what’s been happening this week after some seriously scorching hot days.
1.Geranium ‘Red Admiral’ is still flowering away. This is my absolute favourite colour in the garden.
2. The Sanguisorba is doing surprisingly well. This is it’s third summer and I planted it as a bit of an experiment in an area I thought might be too dry. On a breezy day it adds a bit of waviness which works well with the Stipa at the other side of this bed. A success!
3. Speaking of the Stipa, this is looking particularly fluffy and tactile at the moment and the verbena is just starting to pop up behind it. It has a new name of Nasella these days but I’m so slow with these changes I’m surprised I even know this information.
4. This is the back view of one of my Japanese Anemones and you can see the pretty purple markings on the petals.
From the front it just looks like any other Japanese Anemone except that it’s shorter and flowers much earlier.
5. Now these are two garden thugs that just spread themselves around very promiscuously. But they are brilliant for a shady corner and the oxalis will flower all summer long if it doesn’t scorched by the sun.
6. And just to prove that it’s not all pink and purple in my little garden, here’s some more yellow in the mix for this week’s selection. This Anthemis or dyer’s chamomile is a fairly delicate shade of yellow and I like the way it gives a bit of contrast to the rest of the planting scheme. The spears of the Francoa flowers behind it are just about to open.
