My Little Garden in Week 6 of Lockdown

Aquilegia ‘Rose Ivory’

It rained properly this week for the first time since Lockdown began. The garden really needed a good downpour and it’s looking very green and lush now. In fact I probably need to mow the lawn again today, which is my least favourite job in the garden even with a new cordless mower.

It’s that point in the season when the tulips, which have given excellent value for money, start to fade, and the flowers of late spring take over. I’ve had Aquilegia ‘Rose Ivory’ (pictured above) for about three years now and it’s always the first to flower and a real beauty.

So what else is happening in the garden - here are my Six On Saturday for this week.

1.Clematis ‘Nelly Moser’ is adorning a bit of fence in a semi shaded part of the garden. It would be happy enough in full sun but the colours would fade much quicker.

2. The Phlox that I mentioned last week is blooming away. Considering it was more or less neglected after it finished flowering last year, it looks amazing. I’ve never tried to grow this in a border as it’s such a perfect plant for a container either on it’s own or as part of a spring planter collection.

3. I don’t think I’ve posted a picture of this tulip yet so I’m going to while I still can. It’s petals are the most beautifully sumptuous rich blackcurrant colour. (In my head I hear Monty Don describing it this way…… weird I know!)

4. Here it is alongside Tulip Spring Green and Tulip ‘Dolls Minuet’. And I promise that these are the very last tulip pictures of spring 2020!

5. Moving on, Jacob’s Ladder or Polemonium is a perfect plant for late spring. This variety called ‘Stairway to Heaven’ doesn’t have the best flowers (in my opinion)but it has extremely pretty foliage tinged with pink and is worth having for that reason alone. I also have a newly acquired Polemonium ‘Northern Lights’ from Bluebell Cottage Gardens which has deeper blue flowers and a fabulous scent.

6. And finally, here come the alliums. Purple Sensation has perfect timing and is always guaranteed to burst into life just as the tulips start to fade.

And that is my Six On Saturday for this week. I hope you’ve enjoyed a quick look at my garden highlights and for more ‘sixes’ take a look at the site of the creator of this weekly collection. His Six on Saturday is always an excellent read and there are many more photos and blogs on twitter under the hashtag #SixonSaturday
