Six on Saturday: My Garden in May

May has been a month of highs and lows in my little garden. The biggest annoyance is that ‘something’ (I suspect the fox) sat in the middle of my Verbena bonariensis ‘Lollipop’ and squished it. Planted last year, it was a lovely shape and had come through the winter well, but I went into the garden one morning to find lots of snapped stems. Given the fact that the potential culprit has been spotted a few times I have no doubt that it had found the perfect spot for a snooze!

The second low is that ‘something’ has eaten my new Nepeta x faassenii ‘Kit Kat’s. They were fine when I brought them home and I nurtured them in their pots for a couple of weeks, but as soon as I planted them out they were eaten within days. I rescued one and put back into a container and it seems to be recovering. Maybe I’m destined never to grow Nepeta.

The third is the lack of rain which has meant quite a bit of watering, but that is a problem for everyone at the moment.

Anyway, enough of the negatives and onto the good bits….

Paeonia lactiflora ‘Bowl of Beauty’

In the last few days my Peony has started to flower and it’s a beauty…. a ‘Bowl of Beauty’ in fact. Isn’t it just gorgeous!

Allium Cristophii

The alliums have also been amazing this year. I mostly grow Allium ‘Purple Sensation’ in the garden and I love the way they follow on immediately after the tulips. This year I also have Allium Cristophii which has beautiful starry flowers and seems longer lasting. I’ll be adding more of both for next year.

Erigeron karvinskianus

This is always a pretty sight in May. The dainty little flowers of Erigeron karvinskianus which just go on and on flowering through the summer. Mine are growing over an old tree stump in the sunniest part of the garden.

Nigella damascena (love-in-a-Mist)

These are so easy to grow from seed and are very obliging in terms of spreading themselves around.

Phlox divaricata ‘Clouds of Perfume’

A new purchase for this spring this phlox is growing in a container and is absolutely delightful in terms of colour, abundance of flowers and perfume. Definitely a new spring favourite.

Rosa Handel

And the roses…. well what can I say. I don’t have room for many but this is such a beauty. A climber with a delicate perfume Rosa Handel has to be one of my favourites.

And that is my Six On Saturday for this month. I hope you’ve enjoyed a quick look at my garden highlights and for more ‘sixes’ take a look at the site of the creator of this weekly collection. His Six on Saturday is always an excellent read.
